GridHIKER v1.02Free Manual
Manual version 1.02 , Date 08.07.2007
4. How to use
5. Technical information
GridHIKER is simple software with easy interface. You can try to use it without any instruction. However installation instruction should be red before installation.
First of all you have to keep in mind that it is simple software just for simple visualization of your position against grid system. It works in any place over the world (except polar regions) and can be useful when you have paper map with you. Map has to be GPS ready. It means map has to be supplied with grid (geographical or UTM-WGS 84). GridHIKER allows you to determine your position a bit easier and nicer than by reading raw numerical coordinates.
Installation of GridHIKER is not advanced, so it needs a patience. However it is not difficult.
Any PocketPC running any Windows Mobile system supporting .NET Compact Framework v2.0. So basic requirement is to have .NET Compact Framework v2.0 included in your mobile system or additionally installed. Proper installation packages of .NET Compact Framework v2.0 are free to download from Microsoft pages.
1. Connect Handheld to PC,
2. Make sure ActiveSync is running,
3. Run GHikeSetup.exe and follow instructions on screen.
When Install program asks you for installation folder on PocketPC I advice not to choose default one but change to any folder out of MainMemory. It means when program asks "Install 'BirdGLOBE GridHIKER' using the default application install directory?" answer "No" and choose "Storage Card" or "DiskOnChip" or something other available on your PocketPC. GridHIKER will work a little slower but you will be sure it doesn't take memory for other programs like car navigator.
First of all you have to take into account that GridHIKER displays your position according to grid. And basement of displaying any point is current rectangle of grid. Current rectangle is always centered on the screen.
You can start GridHIKER as any other program on PockectPC choosing Start menu > Programs > GridHIKER. When you start GridHIKER for first time it display geographical grid with equator and Prime Meridian. When program is starting subsequent time it reads file "GHIKER.TRC" placed in the same folder as GridHIKER.EXE. It allows to display recently passed and traced route, and Place Points set before closing GridHIKER.
You simply click Satellite button to start GridHIKER to receive GPS sentences from GPS units. When valid sentences are received GridHIKER displays rectangle of current position and blinking point in this rectangle. You can compare this view to rectangles of map grid to realize your position.
WARNING I: If you have got error message ""Cannot open serial port for GPS Input. Check the port settings." please check the serial port settings clicking About&Port Settings button.
WARNING II: Some units starts sending GPS data with significant delay after clicking Satellite button. In such case GridHIKER displays in position box text "No GPS Input". If you are sure you choose correct serial port just wait for correct data.
Changing the grid
GridHIKER starts to display the most common geographical grid. When you use map with UTM (WGS 84) grid you have to switch the grid using Grid button. GridHIKE v1.xxFree supports only these two grid systems. When you have other grid system on your map you can try to check if one of GridHIKE grid is close to yours (it is possible). But when map is with completely different grid you have to look for other version of GridHIKER which BirdGLOBE is offering for paper map publishers. If Publisher accepted my offer correct version should be available on his WEB page.
Click system "x" (close) button in top-right corner of the screen. There is no particular Exit function in GridHIKER.
4. How to use
Grid lines in geographical grid are drawn every 1'. Further precision is provided by displaying the point in proper part of 1'x1' rectangle (visually) or you can read the usual longitude latitude coordinates at the top of screen. Lines in UTM grid are drawn every 1km and further precision is provided similar way to geographical grid.
GPS position is not visualized automatically when you start GridHIKER. To turn it on you have to click GPS button, or change focus (left-right key on navigation pad) to this button and press Enter key (middle key in navigation pad). GridHIKER grid starts to receive NMEA-183 sentences from GPS unit. During receiving GridHIKER blinks GPS button.
Even when GPS unit starts to send information to program the information can be invaluable. In such case GridHIKER displays text "HDOP>6" in instead of coordinates at the top of screen. HDOP means Horizontal Dilution of Precision. It can take even minutes till program display your position with proper precision. It doesn't depend of GridHIKER. All GPS units works with delay at the beginning.
When GridHIKER receive correct position sentences you will see coordinates and GPS point blinking on the screen.
GridHIKER starts to draw your trace as you move. See "Trace drawing" in this manual.
You can set Place Points, toggle tracing, toggle grid type, change view (Zoom In, Zoom Out), and move grid labels not interrupting GPS visualization.
To stop GPS visualization you can switch it off clicking GPS button or clicking in grid area.
WARNING I: If you have got error message ""Cannot open serial port for GPS Input. Check the port settings." please check the serial port settings clicking About/Settings button.
WARNING II: Some units starts sending GPS data with significant delay after clicking Satellite button. In such case GridHIKER displays in position box text "No GPS Input". If you are sure you choose correct serial port just wait for correct input.
When you are walking or driving with GPS is switched on, GridHIKER logs your way and draws it on screen. This feature is enabled when you start GridHIKER. You can toggle tracing using Trace button. You can delete trace using Erase button (see in this manual). Trace is saved when you close GridHIKER.
Trace length is limited to 600 points. In GridHIKER point in trace is stored every time you change direction. So when you go straight 5km it should takes 2 points. We say "should" because GPS unit has some dilution of precision and can indicate small turning even if go straight.
Zooming In and Out
You can make view narrower or wider using Zoom buttons. You can click buttons (by stylus), you can use navigation pad (left key, right key) to make button focused and press Enter (middle key on navigation pad), and Zoom in GridHIKER can be changed pressing Up or Down key on navigation pad.
Operating the Place Points
In GridHIKER you can use 6 Place Points which are graphically predefined. Each point can be very easy set simply clicking one of corresponding icon. Place Point will be set in place of active Point. Active Point can be:
- Visual pointer (set manually by stylus or by manually entered coordinates),
- GPS pointer (blinking or non blinking when any other point is active),
- Other Place Point (last set).
Place Points are predefined graphically as:
- Home - set this point in place of GPS blinking pointer when you start travel to know where you should return.
- Car - set this point in place of GPS blinking pointer when you leave your car to know where you left it.
- Target - set this point manually (by stylus or coordinates) to know direction to Target of your intended way.
- Way Point 1 - set this point similar like Target to know direction to first point you want to reach before reaching Target.
- Way Point 2 - set this point similar like Target to know direction to second point you want to reach before reaching Target.
- Way Point 3 - set this point similar like Target to know direction to third point you want to reach before reaching Target.
However any Place Point can be used in any other purpose. It is no special functionality assigned to any particular Place Point.
When you set Place Point you can determine visually direction and distance from current position (indicated by blinking GPS Pointer) to particular Place Point. When Place Point is invisible (out of screen) you can Zoom Out view. When Zoom Out limitation doesn't allow to see particular Place Point you can click again corresponding Place Point button. GridHIKER will change the view to make chosen Place Point active. Then you have to realize the direction to Place Point by coordinates. Notice that when you make Place Point active GPS Pointer became inactive. You can erase Place Point using Erasing functionality described in this manual.
Manual entering of coordinates
When you want to move current visual point to place very far from active point you can use manual entering. Click Manual Entering Button to see Manual Entering dialog. You can switch between two types of entering: Geographical or UTM. Choose the type using combo box at the top of dialog. Then enter values in text boxes.
- In Geo coordinates you can enter numbers with decimal dot when you want to use format different than grad, minutes, seconds.
- In UTM type when for Easting or Northing you enter less digits than required entered digits are treated as left most. Assuming that you omitted less important values.
Changing placement of Grid Labels
When you want to change the placement of Grid Labels you can simply click the Labels. They will move to the opposite side of the grid (Top - Bottom, Left - Right). When you want to do it without stylus move the button focus (using Left or Right button of navigation pad) to the Grid Labels button and press Enter (middle button on navigation pad). Grid Labels will move in 4 step cycle.
Erasing (Place Points or Trace)
When you want to erase Place Point or Trace you can click Erase button. All buttons corresponding to elements which can be erased change the state to erasing. When you click button in erasing state you erase corresponding element. There is no undo function for erasing.
COM (GPS) port settings
Internal or external GPS unit sends NMEA-183 sentences to PocketPC and software running on it (like GridHIKER) using serial port. In GridHIKER you can set serial port settings to correctly receive GPS sentences. You can do it clicking About/Settings button. You will see dialog with Author information and two combo boxes at the bottom. Using first combo box you can set serial port. Second combo box sets port speed. You have to read your PocketPC and GPS unit manuals for proper settings.
Navigation pad manipulation
GridHIKER allows you to operate some functions by navigation pad.
In main screen:
- Left - Right key move focus to previous or next button.
- Enter key (in the middle of navigation pad) simulate clicking focused button.
- Up - Down key change the View of grid (Zoom In - Zoom Out)
In dialog boxes:
